Question by Takeah: How to prevent identity fraud when someone has your mortgage application information? I got a letter from my mortgage company saying that an employee “may” have sold the information off my application. They have fired the person, but the deed is already done. What should I do? What would you do? The mortgage company said I get complimentary credit reviewing for two years… but did not mentinon my sister who was the co-signer… and she is worried about her information as well. Both great answers- I’ll let Yahoo people vote on this one. Thank you!

Answer by src50 You could demand that the mortgage company pay for a credit-monitoring service – that would be my first response.
You could also place a freeze on your credit record at all three bureaus. Its inconvenient and they charge a fee, but it prevents any new credit from being opened unless you verify the request first.

So how can a company protect itself against fraud? It all starts with the “tone at the top.” No company is too small to have internal controls in place to detect and prevent fraud. As an owner, you should adopt these principles and make them a part of your company’s culture. Video Rating: 0 / 5

Answer by keiko The only way to get a fraud alert on your card is if you put it there. I bought a membership in Lifelock and the way they make sure that nobody can take out credit in my name is to put a fraud alert at each of one of the credit bureaus you mentioned. The companies assume that someone has already stolen my identity and refuse any requests for new credit cards, loans, etc, so it is a way to prevent identity theft of this type.
This also means that I can’t take out a new credit card unless I get the fraud alert lifted.
You can put on your own fraud alert without having to pay a company to do it. Each state has its own rules about how it is to be done and whether it will be free or not.
The article at bankrate.com goes into how fraud alerts work.
