www.connectedlifetv.com Whether it’s phishing, pharming or yet another email scam – online fraud is still a major problem in North America – not to mention identity theft. The Web is convenient, but we all need to be aware of its risks. Internet fraud loss reached an all-time high in 2007 – over 9 million. There are some simple things you can do to help protect yourself. First, protect your computer by: 1. Keep your operating system updated 2. Install a Firewall, anti-virus software, and anti-spyware software (and make sure you set anti-virus software to scan email) 3. Protect your Wireless and Wired Network 4. Install a Pop-Up Blocker 5. Back-Up your Computer and use secure passwords And remember: * Be suspicious of any email with urgent requests for personal financial information. * Never click on the link in the email to go to a web page. Type in the web address by hand into your web browser. * If you are in any doubt about a possible phishing attack, contact the company that the email claims to be from at a number you already have (do not use any numbers given in the email). * Never disclose personal information in response to an unsolicited email or over the phone
