Is the American Cancer Society a fraud? Where is all the money going?
Financial Assistance and Other Resources – National Cancer I…
Financial assistance is given in the form of limited grants for certain treatment …. The American Cancer Society (ACS) offers programs that help cancer …http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp. American Cancer society
The average American diagnosed with cancer spend upwards of US$25 000 of their savings attempting to save their lives. Sadly, these people are not getting much for their money.
Spending for the ‘American Cancer Society’ alone is over US$1 million a day. Only about 16% goes directly into programs for cancer patients, the rest into bureaucratic overhead and expensive drug research.
My girlfriend has breast cancer and the ACS wouldn’t help her. They referred her to other agencies like DSHS and social security . How come they don’t help cancer patients who really need their help like the low income and people without health insurance. My girl got a free pillow. That’ not going to help her.
American Cancer Society
Local ACS office often help cancer patients with treatment-related travel expenses including transportation, medicine and medical supplies. Along with financial assistance, ACS offers support and advice for cancer patients and family members, as well as extensive news on cancer prevention and research.
I am saying ACS are a fraud because ACS said they provide financial assistant. ACS only referred you to other agencies. That’s not providing fiancial assistance.
This is my girlfriends second occurrence of breast cancer in the same breast. She was cancer free for 12 years. The first time she had a lumpectomy and radiation. This year she had qualifications that were cancerous. They did a mastectomy. She doesn’t want to do chemo. I think that’s why she’s not getting any help.

While a certain percentage by law of non profit orgs does infact go to patient care, a lot goes to research.
And even what goes to research isnt much.
Most of what is donated goes to their overhead – it costs money to run an org, put on the walks and fund raisers, manufacture the items they sell, pay their employees, pay their bills associated with having an office, and pay their telemarketers.
Basically, it is a social concept to make people think they are helping the cause.
While there are a few non profit orgs that really are donating most of their money and trying to help, the major ones have so much over head that it is impossible to keep the org in business, and donate that much money.
Part of this is partly greed from the owners. But they are non profit orgs, so there are limits to how much people can be paid. Part of the problem is the general public wont donate without having tangible proof their money is doing something. To the general public, getting a bracelet, or free refreshments at a walk is tangible proof. THey dont see the money being donated to patients or research. And a lot of these people have never had to go through the monetary hardships associated with cancer treatment, especially the org leaders.
I agree with you I had Larynx Cancer and ask for help all I got from American Cancer Society was we DON”T do that… I wouldn’t give them the time of day…But after 7 years and $300.000.00 I’m still alive and well
I am so sorry that you are not getting the assistance that your friend needs. My experience with the Cancer Society was wonderful. They helped me find affordable housing close to the hospital so I could stay near my husband for months on end. They even paid for a couple of weeks. They gave me emotional support and advise when I needed it and sent books on what to expect from chemo through advise for caretakers.
When requests are beyond what they can provide they do refer people to other agencies. I can understand your frustration with expenses. I can see how I will be paying off medical bills for years to come. Aim your anger where it should most go which is our government which doesn’t make having decent health insurance easily available.
Your friend is lucky to have someone who cares so much about her and is trying to get help for her. Speak with her doctors and the medical staff treating her to see if they can advise her how to get financial assistance. I was told that the hospital has people to help me sort out our medical bills. Also, google breast cancer and see what other sites that there are and check into them.
“Expensive drug research” is what’s keeping lots of folks alive today who would be dead without them.
Try not to blame one organization for not helping. There are so many people in need. Instead, focus your energy on positive things, like finding another organization that might be able to help.
Sorry to hear about your friend’s experience. My wife was diagnosed with colon cancer just over a year ago. We went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for treatment. After her surgery, she had 6 weeks of radiation and chemotherapy and they needed her to get treatments daily. Now to the point of my story, there was a place called Hope Lodge where she was able to stay for free while under treatment for cancer. Hope Lodge is an outreach of the American Cancer Society and as long as someone is treating for cancer they can stay there for free. The only regulations they had is your treatment had to be a minimum of 1 week and there was a waiting list to get in.
Obviously you and your friend are frustrated by ACS’s lake of help in her case, but the ACS does help many, many people including our family.
